Melancholy Soundtracks: A Requiem for 2020

A perfect mix for the end of 2020 comes to us from Paul Asbury Seaman. All soundtrack cuts, all with varying degrees of melancholy, all forming an ideal coda for 2020.

Here's what Paul says about the mix:

“I’ve been sitting on this playlist for more than three years. Never got around to firming it up for a Low Lights mix. It dawned on me just the other day that the eight movies from which these pieces are drawn are all meditations on death and loss. So now seems like a good time to share it. Also, all of these movies were released around the turn of the Millennium, except “Battle of Algiers” (1963) which has one of the most sorrowful themes ever put to music—by the great Ennio Morricone, who died this year.”

Thanks Paul for another excellent mix!

Up next - it's best of the year list time!

Cheers!

Arrival alternative sountrack

I love the film, Arrival, so I should have thought of this myself. But a listener commented on my Blade Runner alternative mix that I should do an alternative mix for Arrival. Yes!

So here it is - An Alternative Arrival Soundtrack. I absolutely love Johann Johannsson's original soundtrack, probably one of my top two or three soundtracks of all time. So this mix is not attempting to make something that I think is better than his score. It's sort of a supplement to the original, a collection of tracks that fit with the style of the original.

All of the tunes are newer than the original soundtrack, which came out in 2016. All the tunes except On The Nature Of Daylight by Max Richter. That amazing track was used to open and close the film. Here I use it in an unusual way - it plays backward then forward at the end of the mix. The film messes with the concept of the passage of time and the Richter track bookends the film to bring events of the end back around to the beginning. So playing it backward then forward kind of does the same thing. And it's crazy how much the track still sounds the same while playing backward.

If you haven't seen the film, go see it. It is definitely one of my top three favorite films of all time. Here's a couple links to the Blade Runner alternative mix...

http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2017/12/alternative-blade-runner-2049-soundtrack.html

And what the heck here's my other alternative soundtrack mix - for the film Annihilation.

Cheers!

PS - the tune @ 15:00 is from my son. He did an excellent track for the Blade Runner mix and so I went to him immediately for this mix as well.

The Way Home

Earlier this year I was asked by the folks at Lifted Icons to do a guest mix. It was a unique mix because I did two 20 minute sets that were then incorporated into a larger nearly 2-hour mix.

The parameters for my mixes were as follows:
1. A lonely, melancholic wander through the void between stars
2. A triumphant end for our struggle to the stars

You can find the 2-hour mix at Lifted Icons here... https://www.mixcloud.com/LiftedIcons/cartographer/

I liked how everything turned out. It was especially fun to cut the 2nd mix as it had a few louder tunes that I normally might not use. I was too lazy to put together a totally new mix so I decided to put my two parts of the Lifted Icons mix into one new mix.

After I put them together I started tinkering. I added a few tunes to make it longer. And then I changed a lot of the first part but kept the same "drifting in the void" feel. The transition from melancholic wander to triumphant return starts at the 22:28 mark with the Underworld tune. The title for the mix comes from a track I used by the same name from Tony Anderson. It fit perfectly with the journey from part one to part two.

Cheers!

Shimmer - An alternative soundtrack to the film Annihilation

I saw the film Annihilation on opening weekend and really liked it. It is directed by the same guy that directed Ex Machina and has the same crew doing the score. While I didn't like it quite as much as my favorite sci-fi film of the last few years, Arrival, I did like it quite a bit. And I especially loved the score. It goes seamlessly from acoustic guitar to synthetic noises to creepy choral sounds. It's great.

So of course I had to make my own interpretation of the soundtrack, just like I did for Blade Runner 2049. I liked how that one turned out so much that I knew immediately after seeing Annihilation that I'd soon be making a mix.

I started collecting a few tunes for the mix but it wasn't until I found "Elemental Shimmer" by Robert Davies that the project really took off.  The music from Davies' album is perfect for setting the scene and it's even more appropriate because it's got the word "Shimmer" in the title.  The Shimmer is the anomaly enveloping "area x" that the scientists enter to try and figure what the heck is going on.

Making these alternative soundtracks is a lot of fun and I'm sure I'll be doing more in the future. I hope you like this one.

Cheers!

Sci Fi Soundtracks

The title of this mix pretty much says it all - this is a collection of excellent tracks from excellent science fiction films.

This isn't meant to be definitive as in "The Best SciFi Soundtracks of All Time!"  It's just some of my favorite music from some of my favorite sci fi films.  I purposely stayed away from stuff like Star Wars, Star Trek, Close Encounters and 2001.  Those are a little too recognizable and most of the time don't fit with the ambient feel of this mix.

I just had to start the mix with what may be my all time favorite sci fi soundtrack - Solaris by Cliff Martinez.  I like the movie pretty well but the soundtrack is what really made that film for me.  Another soundtrack that I absolutely had to include is Arrival from Johann Johannsson.  Easily my favorite film of last year and the soundtrack made me love it even more.  A lot of the music in this mix is fairly new, released within the last ten years or so.  The exception being the tracks from Blade Runner and Dune.

Are there any sci fi soundtracks that I should check out for further mixes?  Any favorite sci fi film music that you have?  Let me know in the comments.

Cheers!

Cinematic Headspace

I've been on a big Johann Johnnsson kick lately.  He released one of my favorite albums of the year "Orphee" a few months ago and now he has scored the excellent film "Arrival."  It is a wonderful soundtrack that really adds to an already fantastic film.

Johannsson tells the story of how he made the first track in this mix, "Heptpod B," at Song Exploder here...

https://soundcloud.com/hrishihirway/song-exploder-johann-johannsson-arrival-score

That new soundtrack is the jumping off point for this cinematic mix.  All the music used was released this year with the exception of tracks from "The Martian" & "The Revenant" which are 2015 recordings.  All these soundtracks are superb and I hope you will seek out the full albums.  I've included the name of the film in the tracklist.

Cheers!

Cinema Atmospherica

As with so many of these mixes this one grew out of one particular recording.  In this case it was The Revenant soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto with Alva Noto.  It's an absolutely gorgeous film score and I knew I needed to build a mix around it.

This mix, as the title suggests, is fairly atmospheric in feel and sound.  The tracks used are a combo of newer recordings & old ones too, with The Revenant making three appearances.  That soundtrack is definitely going to be on my best of list at the end of 2016.

Enjoy

Ghosts of the Future

At the end of May I posted an excellent mix from Mike G of the Ambient Music Guide.  We agreed to do guest mixes for each other and that the starting point would be a title that each of us would give the other.  We sent each other a few title ideas, we each chose one and got to work.

Mike chose "Lapse into Reverie" and the result was his beautiful mix that you can find here...

And here...

Mike gave me about 4 or 5 title ideas and my attention was immediately drawn to one in particular... "Ghosts of the Future."

The first thing that comes to mind is the film "Interstellar", which I had just re-watched right before this project.  With its time dilation and Murph's "ghost" communicating from the future, the soundtrack is the perfect launching point for this mix.  I like soundtracks but Hans Zimmer usually isn't a favorite.  However with this film he strikes a perfect balance.  At times the music has a Philip Glass feel to it.

I also thought of snippets of voices as ghosts and so I worked in some spoken word excerpts here & there, as well as using tracks that had voices or vocoder. Overall I hope the mix conveys a strange, otherworldly feel to it.

Thanks again to Mike G for doing the mix swap with me and thanks for a great mix title.

Enjoy

Sunday Morning Music Vol. 8 - slow mornings

Grab a cup of coffee and the paper with this mix as your Sunday soundtrack.

This iteration of the Sunday morning series uses mostly new music including a couple of great Bob Dylan covers from Sarah Jarosz and Phosphorescent.  I couldn't resist starting the mix with the wonderful "Morning" from Beck's new release.  I found this track on a mix by Bob Duskis over at Six Degrees Records.  Check out their excellent mix on Mixcloud here...SixDegreesRecords

From there we move on to a beautiful, jazzy track from Philémon Chante that I have been itching to use for a while.  That cut is from his album called Les Sessions Cubaines which you can find on Bandcamp here...Philémon Chante

There a couple soundtracks represented in the mix from two of the best films of 2013, "Her" and "Nebraska."  Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett collaborated for the "Her" soundtrack, with two cuts in this mix.  Mark Orton did the beautifully simple soundtrack for "Nebraska" and it shows up here in the track "The Old Compressor Escape."  I've got an Americana mix waiting in the wings which will have more from that soundtrack.

One of my other favs is the cut from Bill Callahan.  He remixed his 2013 album, "Dream River," as a dub album called "Have Fun With God."  It's fantastic!

Enjoy.

things left unsaid

Most regular visitors to this blog are aware that I also post these mixes over at Mixcloud.  I love Mixcloud.  I got in very early on and so have developed quite a few followers.  It's been fun watching it grow.

One thing that has helped in growing that following is being one of the featured cloudcasts in the Ambient/Chillout category.  Well, apparently now Low Light Mixes is also one of the featured cloudcasts in the Classical category.  Some of my mixes my have some classical related tunes but I definitely wouldn't characterize these mixes as "classical."  But, what the heck, I'll take the extra exposure.

Being featured in the classical category was the genesis for this new mix, "things left unsaid."  It's an all classical mix.  Maybe it would be better to call it an orchestral mix because about half of the tracks are from film soundtracks, so not classical in the purest sense.

Most of the music is fairly new.  The oldest cut being the Jonnie Greenwood piece from 2007.  There a few tracks from Caleb Burhans and David Lang that are from 2013 releases that didn't make it onto my year in review lists because I didn't find them until 2014.  I found them on someone else's best of list.  They are both excellent recordings.  And of course I had to include some Johann Johannsson because I pretty much like everything he does.

I hope you enjoy this classical diversion.

undiscovered soundtrack

I love soundtracks. And if you look at the tracklist for this mix, you'll see that I have a few favorite composers.

At the top of that list are Clint Mansell & Cliff Martinez. They are responsible for two of my favorite soundtracks,
The Fountain & Solaris.

Jon Hopkins, a new composer on the soundtrack scene, could soon join those two as a favorite. His soundtrack for the movie
Monsters, got a lot of play here. I ended up using three tracks from that album in this mix, I just couldn't resist.

Actually I doubled up a few artists in this mix, Martinez, Hopkins, Sigur Ros, Nick & Warren Ellis, Underworld. Normally I don't like to do that but it just sort of happened that way. This is a relatively short mix but I think it works. Sometimes I don't make it to the end of some mixes, this way hopefully listeners are still in to it & focused at the end.

Enjoy this "undiscovered soundtrack".

Cinematica

I got the idea for this mix over at the Hypnos records forum.  In the "Now Playing" thread, someone posted several entries in a row about listening to various soundtracks. Some favorites of mine, Cliff Martinez's "Traffic" & "Narc" and Clint Mansell's "The Fountain", were on the list.  It got me thinking & listening to soundtracks for a week or two and this new mix, "Cinematica", is the result.

There are 25 tracks in this mix, so it keeps moving pretty well I think.  I realized after I was done that a few of the tracks appear in other low light mixes.  Oh well, that's bound to happen with so many mixes and fewer and fewer brain cells.

I would say my favorite soundtracks from the past 10 - 15 years would have to be "Solaris" from Cliff Martinez & "The Fountain" by Clint Mansell.  I purposely used a lesser known Martinez cut from "Wicker Park" but one that had the same "Solaris" feel to it.  Then of course I discovered that I'd already used the same cut in an earlier mix. Duh!

This mix was easy & fun to put together so I'm sure I'll be doing another one in the future.  Any suggestions for essential soundtracks that I should check out?
