quiet fusion 2026

A little over a year ago I posted a mix of quiet fusion jazz tunes which I really enjoyed curating. So it was only a matter of time before I made another and here it is. This mix has some of the same artists as the first one - Mile Davis, Soft Machine, Gong, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Brand X, along with new additions Not surprisingly, most of the tracks are from the 1970s, a few from the 80s and one new track by Elephant9 released in 2024.

ECM Favorites Vol. 2 by Erwin Broers

I know two things that are true - Erwin Broers is a great contributor to Low Light Mixes and I'm an airhead. 🤪 Last year after I posted a mix of my favorite albums from ECM records, Erwin did his own version. He sent it to me in September and I totally spaced out and forgot about it until this week. But it works out in the end because I've been busy lately so a guest mix is just what I needed.

Here's what Erwin says about his ECM favorites:

"When LLM published a set of highlights from the revered ECM label back in early Aug '25, https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/ecm-favorites/, it just felt like short-selling its 1600+ title catalogue. A second installment seemed only a matter of time. And here it is!

The mix mostly contains tracks one could characterize as "smooth contemporary jazz", the kind of music you put on to unwind after a busy day. A classic in this genre is John Abercrombie's "Timeless".

But it also features a very special piece by Stephan Micus, the renowned German multi-instrumentalist, for whom ECM seems to have been created. We hear him singing in an imaginary language and playing several instruments; hauntingly beautiful!

Sunday Morning Music Vol. 25 - The Beauty of Sundays

It's been a little over a year since my last Sunday Morning Music mix so I figured we needed to revisit this beautiful series. ECM Favorites

I've been listening to the ECM record label since the 1970s. You can always count on ECM to put out interesting and sometimes great records.

My favorite ECM release is Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians." It's not only my favorite ECM album, it's one of my top albums of all-time. A real desert island record for me. A few of my other favorite regular ECM artists are Steve Tibbetts, Eberhard Weber & Pat Metheny.

Quiet Fusion

Back in the 70s I was a huge prog rock fan and an offshoot of that fandom was discovering jazz fusion. I think Jean-Luc Ponty was the first proper fusion record I ever owned. I believe I was a fusion fan before getting into jazz in general.

I've been planning on creating a fusion mix for months but just haven't gotten around to it. Then last month I was sipping coffee on a cold morning, listening to a fusion playlist, when a couple of laid back tunes came up. I immediately started a new playlist for quiet fusion tracks. And this mix is the result.

It's got some of my all time favorite jazz fusion artists - Alan Holdsworth, Brand X, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock & Miles Davis. But surprisingly, not my fav fusion artist - Bill Bruford. He just didn't have anything quiet enough that worked with the mix. But at least his guitarist, Alan Holdsworth made the cut.

I hope you enjoy listening to this little diversion as much as I did creating it.

Sunday Morning Music Vol. 24 - Dream State

I did not do a Sunday Morning Music mix at all last year 😮 That's probably the first year since the series started in 2011 that I didn't post a Sunday mix. The Sunday Morning series is one of the reasons that Low Light Mixes blew up on Mixcloud. So you'd think I would be posting more of these mixes to feed the algorithm. But, no, there is no plan for curating these mixes, they just happen when they happen.

With all that preamble, I'm excited to finally get a Sunday mix up & running. This follows the classic format of some laid back jazz, some ambient & some quiet vocal tunes. My favorite track in the mix is "Amber Waves" by Ethel Cain. It's from her new album, "Perverts", which is an interesting collection of tunes that range from noisy, dark ambient to beautiful vocal tracks like "Amber Waves."

Jazz Trax 2024

This year, like last year, I listened to more jazz than I have in a long time. It should come as no surprise that a lot of my listening tends towards atmospheric jazz. My favorite jazz record of the year, Nala Sinephro - Endlessness, definitely falls into that ambient jazz category. Or as a Pitchfork reviewer called in - Jazz, Not Jazz.

JAZZ - ish

I'm not exactly sure how this mix started. I think I was listening to the track, Outlook Remains Untouched, by ||||||||||||||||||||, yes that's the actual name the artist goes by.

I like the jazzy vibe the tune has. It reminded me of similar tracks from the heyday of glitch and idm that also have a jazz feel to them. Sort of Jazz-ish.

So I grabbed some older tracks from 2001, 2002, 2006, and mixed them with new tunes to come up with this electronic mix that isn't really jazz...more like Jazz-ish.

A Quiet Way - Mysterioso Vol. 2

This year we've had quite a variety of mixes here at LLM headquarters. From underwater ambient to space rock guitar to alternative soundtracks to Thai funk/soul/psychedelia/surf rock. Now we take another turn, this time to atmospheric jazz.

"I was trying to put together an atmospheric, classic jazz mix of tunes inspired from a slowed down and reverb version of Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade. However, I had some trouble finding the tracks which matched what I had in mind. This ambient jazz mix happened instead.

There are a couple of ‘classics’, Duke Ellington’s haunting Solitude (1934) and Miles Davis' ethereal In A Silent Way (1969). The other tracks are fairly recent in comparison but all have a loose jazz theme. Once I had finished the mix I discovered the Low Light Mysterioso mix which has a very similar feel and thinking behind it, dark, ambient, brooding, atmospheric. So here is Mysterioso 2, I hope you enjoy listening."

Favorite Jazz Albums of 2023

I was doing a lot of painting around the houseback in October and I was growing tired of my usual playlists. So I was happy when I stumbled on some 2023 jazz releases I hadn't heard. That set me off on a jazz binge over the last three months of the year which was fun because I discovered all sorts of new music, enough that I could make a year-end list and mix.

I hope to continue diving into new jazz artists and recordings next year. While I love all my old jazz albums from Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, etc., it was exciting to seek out new stuff the same way I am constantly on the lookout for new music in the ambient sphere or in the indie rock scene. I see so many people get hung up on the latest reissues of a classic jazz recordings that I wonder if they ever take the time to appreciate any of the excellent new music being released.

Sunday Morning Music Vol. 23 - A Sunday Kind of Love

A couple of tunes were the inspiration for cranking out another Sunday Morning mix. First is the lead-off track - A Sunday Kind of Love by Etta James. It's simply a great tune that I'm surprised I haven't used before. Next is an track from 1971 that I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago. I stumbled on an Instagram reel that talked about the gentle beauty of "Curry Rice" by Kenji Endo. I immediately fell in love with it and the rest of the album.

That's where the mix started and from there it follows the usual formula - some jazz, some ambient, some folk - all flowing together in a sweet Sunday mix.

Jazz Tracks 2022

I usually listen to jazz at work while doing some computer maintenance or slogging through emails. I don't keep as close track of standout albums like I do with ambient and indie. So this is a collection of tracks that I happened to enjoy this year and of course they had to fit with the vibe of the whole mix.

My top 5 jazz albums are:

Charles Lloyd - Trio Of Trios
Makaya McCraven - In These Times
Vega Trails - Tremors in the Static
Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola - Open
Oren Ambarchi - Shebang & Oren Ambarchi - Ghosted

I cheated on number 5 and included two Oren Ambarchi albums, both of which aren't exactly jazz but I don't really know what genre they are so they get plopped into jazz. I absolutely love both albums and it's my list so I can do whatever I want. Number 4 on the list may not be jazz either as I had it in my top 10 for ambient albums. It's the perfect melding of the two genres. Makaya McCraven - In These Times has gotten a lot of mainstream attention and has shown up on a lot of year-end lists and it deserves it. The album by Vega Trails is essentially bass & wind instruments so it's nice and sparse which why I love it. Charles Lloyd - Trio of Trios is the most straightforward jazz and it's fantastic.

This is the last mix of 2022. Here's to another good musical year in 2023.

Autumn Trumpet by Paul Asbury Seaman

Certain instruments seem suited for particular settings or seasons. I've always thought that piano works well as a winter accompaniment. Twangy guitar goes well with hot weather. And trumpet feels right at home during autumn.

Which brings us to the latest collection from Paul Asbury Seaman - Autumn Trumpet. The mix sets the mood perfectly. Here's what Paul has to say about it:

“No Scandinavian angst this time, just mellow trumpet and, hopefully, some pleasant surprises. Mostly very languid night music, interspersed with a bit of fall color and swirling leaves... The contemplative theme seems to fit with the season—my favorite).”
