Slow Sequences

This mix is pretty straightforward - it's a collection of Berlin-school style tracks where the arpeggio is relatively slow. I don't know what the actual BPMs are but these tracks are not the driving sequences usually associated with Berlin-school music. They unfold at a more languid, chill pace.

I was very happy to be able to include the track "Wenn der Südwind weht" by Roedelius in this mix as it's one of my favorite electronic tracks of all time.

The Joy of Trains by Paul Asbury Seaman

Another train mix? Another Berlin-school mix? Yes and hell yes! I've been struggling to keep up with creating new mixes and then, like a train pulling into the station right on time, Paul comes to me with a new mix. Perfect timing!

This one has tunes that are all fairly recent so it was fun to hear new stuff or discover new artists. I'm always up for new Berlin-school music and this set from Paul does that with long, evolving tracks that suck you in and keep you going. Here's what Paul says about his latest collection:

"I expect that for people who commute to work by train, there’s not much novelty in it. But most of my train-themed mixes imagine a long-distance trip where the journey itself is the experience and the destination somewhere in your imagination. As I’ve said before, sequencer-based “Berlin School” synthesizer music is a natural fit to evoke the subtle, hypnotic rhythms of travel by train. The six artists in this set were all new to me this year—and what a joy it has been to discover them."

Thanks again, Paul, for this wonderful collection of train tracks.

Kosmische Musik - A Starter Guide Vol. 2 by Erwin Broers

To finish the first quarter of the year we get another excellent berlin-school mix from EM master, Erwin Broers. Just like his ECM mix posted last month, Erwin sent me this mix last year but I spaced out and forgot I had until this year. Luckily for historical mixes like this one, the post is evergreen and can be appreciated anytime.

I'll repost what he said about volume 1:

"Here's a follow-up on my mix "Back To The Roots Of Berlin School". As you recall it featured a collection of electronic music tracks from the 1990s, that were inspired by the patterns, sounds and analog instruments of the 1970s and early 1980s. Back then, nobody talked about "Berlin School Electronic Music". That label would only appear somewhere mid 1990s, probably to honour the place where the genre was born. Fans in the early days would rather use the term "Kosmische Musik" (German for "Cosmic Music"). An explanation for the "cosmic" element is to be found in the use of the step sequencer, which made it easy to create hypnotic rhythm loops with up to 32 notes or steps, set a tempo, and mix them over electronic drones, soundscapes, soloing, washes, white noise and space sounds. The effect was to “float” the listener through endless terrestrial or cosmic space. For those not keen on using illicit substances, it was an interesting and harmless alternative "trip"!

I thought about creating a mix of some classic pieces from that first era, but soon found out one mix would not be enough to do justice to all the fantastic "Cosmic Music" that was made back then. So we get two mixes! This post is for volume 2 and you can find volume 1 here - https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2025/06/kosmische-musik-starters-guide-vol-1.html

Thanks, Erwin, for another great cosmic trip!

Cheers!

Berlin School EM 2025 End Of Year XL Update by Erwin Broers

Oh man, what a way to end the year! Erwin has been curating excellent Berlin-school mixes for us all year and now he finishes it off with this massive end-of-the-year update. I've been in this headspace for a while now so this perfectly satisfies my craving. Thanks to Erwin for a great year of electronic mixes.

Here what he has to say about this year-ender:

"Another smorgasbord of what the electronic music scene has to offer these days and another invitation for space travelling! It's an extra long mix given my incapacity to choose from the wide offer of sublime tracks and albums that were released in 2025.

The diversity in styles within this music category is remarkable; synth pop, retro, contemporary and progressive Berlin School, cosmic sound tapestries, contemplative/meditative/emotional (drone) ambient and a lengthy deep house track.

Special mention for two female electronic music artists Andrea Cichecki and Lisa Bella Donna. Unfortunately, women are rare in this line of music, but these ladies more than deserve their place in this mix with thrilling evocative compositions. Check it out & enjoy your trip!"

Happy New Year to everyone and here's to 2026 being another fantastic year of music.

Cheers!

Mentalized - The Music of Wolfram Spyra by Erwin Broers

Between Erwin Broers & Paul Asbury Seaman I have been exposed to a ton of excellent berlin-school music over the last couple years. Erwin contines his great string of mixes with this new one featuring the music of Wolfram Spyra. I was totally unfamiliar with this music before hearing this mix and now I'm thankful for the introduction.

Here's what Erwin says about this mix:

"In the mid-1990s, when interest for 'Kosmische Musik' (German)/'Cosmic Music' (English) regained, some Electronic Music artists chose to dig deeper into that first highly creative era, hence starting the 'Retro Berlin School' subgenre. Other artists merely borrowed certain elements (multi-facetted sequencing, layered soundscapes, space fx, Mellotron choirs,...) and then added their own spices to the sauce.

One of the artists that managed to create his own style of contemporary "Berlin School Electronic Music" is the German Fine Arts student (then), and musician, inventor and sound designer (now, dixit his own website) Wolfram Spyra (Kassel, 1964), aka "Der Spyra" or simply "Spyra". His style is somewhere between floating, rhythmic, meditative, downtempo and groovy, yes almost danceable. A very interesting blend of old skool and modern electronic ingredients!

This mix is a chronological overview of 20 years of releases from 1997 till 2018."

The Next Train by Paul Asbury Seaman

The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one.

Here's what Paul says about the mix:

"You’re sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out across the landscape below. It’s night and soft dots of light here and there indicate other houses, groups of houses, a road. In the distance you can see the black edge of a ruler, marking the gap between carriages and a bright bar of light moving left in front of it. Like happens in dreams, you are watching the scene and then you are in it, your seat tipped back, not quite asleep, you’re looking out the window. It’s a modern train. Gone is the classic click-click, click-click, but you can still feel the subtle rocking back and forth as the train hurtles silently forward. Under the stars. The cacophony of a station stop, made eerie in the wee hours of the morning. Or memory stirring up a previous adventure then returning you to your current tranquility."

Thanks, Paul, for another excellent entry in your continuing train series.

Berlin School EM Summer 2025 Update

The king of berlin-school music returns with another stellar mix. Our friend, Erwin Broers, was nice enough to put together a follow up to his spring EM mix with this excellent summer update.

Here what he says about this latest set:

"For this summer update in the synth-cosmic-Berlin School-electronic-music scene, I faced the same problem as a few months ago with the spring update: a heterogeneous bunch of tracks in a wide variety of moods, rhythms and styles. This time, to produce a coherent mix, I figured telling the "story" of a journey into outer space - not very original I know... ;-)

Starting with a couple of upbeat pieces, to depict hectic life on Earth, we then lift off slowly by means of a set of tracks focused on soloing, soundscapes, layered sequencing and space sounds. As we reach the edge of the solar system, several deep contemplative atmospheres invite us to consider the distance travelled and the long journey ahead....I'll leave the scenery of the places visited to the listener's imagination! In short, a pleasant floating audiotrip just under two hours, to be enjoyed day and night, lounging in the shade or stargazing on your back.

Special mention for a fantastic retro track by Xan Alexander in pure Berlin School style, a bit of electric guitar bombast by Otarion aka Rainer Klein and a pick from ex-Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann's latest album "Nightfall"."
