Dystopian Dream

I'm not sure how this mix started. It was probably just a case of me stumbling across a tune that made me think of a dystopian sci-fi movie and from there I collected tracks over a few years. From what I can tell, I started gathering songs 6 years ago.

I wasn't sure what the mix would sound like when I started laying down the tracks. As it began to take shape I realized it kind of sounded like one of my Blade Runner mixes. It definitely has some of that vibe but I think it's different enough to be it's own thing. I'm very happy with how this one turned out especially considering I didn't have much a plan at the beginning.

FIFTH SECTOR - Blade Runner Ambience 2025

I really didn't intend to follow an 80s themed mix with another mix with an 80s vibe. But I couldn't help myself because of the new album from Crows Labyrinth - Neon Scenes II: Echoes of Then https://crowslabyrinth.bandcamp.com/album/neon-scenes-ii-echoes-of-then

The album is a follow-up to an album called "Neon Scenes I: Granular Dreams." Both albums are longform generative drone ambient pieces that have this great Blade Runner vibe. Replicant Memories

Blade Runner is obviously one of the great sci-fi films of all time, with one of the best soundtracks of all time. As a testament to the staying power of Vangelis' work, we still have a artists today that mimic the sound of the Blade Runner score.

The recording that got me started on this mix is brand new from Crows Labyrinth called "Neon Scenes I: Granular Dreams". It's a longform generative ambient drone track with a lead synth that has a great Blade Runner vibe. You can find it here... https://crowslabyrinth.bandcamp.com/album/neon-scenes-i-granular-dreams

As soon as I heard that track I knew I had to create another Blade Runner mix. This is my fourth one. Here are the links to the others:

One thing that sets this mix apart from the others is that many of the tunes are very purposely trying to replicate the sound of the original soundtrack. Some cuts even use rain, voices and effects to mimic the feel. I added a bit of BR sound fx on a couple of tracks to reinforce the vibe. Most of the time though it's that lead synth sound that transports me right back to 1982.

Some folks may have a problem with current artists so blatantly aping a style and sound(some more than others here). But I don't care, I just love the overall sound and feel of these tracks.

Blade Runner Pop/Rock Soundtrack

What if the original Blade Runner film had a pop music soundtrack? You know how some films have an instrumental score but also an album of pop/rock tunes that were used in the film or inspired by the film. If Blade Runner had such a collection maybe it would sound like this mix.

This all started when I was listening to Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 1 and I thought that it sounded like it would sort of fit with the Blade Runner score we are all so familiar with. That got me thinking about the question posed at the top of this post. As I started collecting tracks the first place I went was Gary Numan & Tubeway Army - Replicas. How could I not use a song called "Replicas"? Likewise from the same album, how could resist the track "Are Friends Electric?"

I got some great recommendations from Mixcloud listeners in this thread - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/posts/pop-tunes-for-blade-runner/ Tracks from Public Image Ltd., John Foxx, Quieter Than Spiders and New Order came right from those suggestions. There were also some great ideas in that thread which will work perfectly in a Blade Runner alternative score mix. I'm hyped to do that mix but I should probably wait a bit after this BR mix.
