Best of 2007

There were some excellent releases in 2007, so I thought I'd feature some in a new mix.

My favorite ambient recording of the year was Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline. I know there are quite a few people who didn't care for the cd, but I love it. I like the more orchestral feel. I like that SOTL relies less & less on synths. A beautiful record.

My favorite vocal record was PG Six - Slightly Sorry. Snips from the Boomkat review..."a collection of quite unashamedly gorgeous 'proper' songs...'Slightly Sorry' is an album without tricks...'The Dance', the second track on the record - there's nothing necessarily modern about the song itself, it could have come out any time since 1969 and nobody would have batted an eyelid, but it's great music, pure and simple." I played this probably more than any other record this year.

As far as this mix is concerned, I pretty much stayed away from vocal tunes, with one exception in the middle of the mix. The mix opens with four drone tracks, including Paul Bradley, a new discovery thanks to the folks at the Hypnos forum. Some of his stuff gets a bit dark & dissonant for my taste, but his 2007 release "Chroma" features gorgeous, wide open drones. Th drones gradually giveway to piano based tunes which morph into electronics with a little beat then back to ambient to finish it off.

My full best of 2007 list follows the tracklisting for the mix. What were your favorite releases this year? Please leave some comments, I'd love to hear what you think.

Here's the mix...

I wish I could drown the world in reverberation

I am starting to repeat myself. I've done two piano mixes, two string theory mixes, two winter mixes and now a second guitar mix. I decided to do a new guitar mix because I seem to have come across a lot of good guitar music lately.
All the tracks on this mix are new, from either 2006 or 2007. The music ranges from electric to acoustic. Originally I intended to do a feedback-filled guitarscape like a long Peter Wright song. But in the end the music in this mix is fairly straight forward. Some is ambient, some is pretty, some is droney(is that a word?).
I hope you enjoy it.

Netlabel Mix

I've gone on another binge of downloading music from netlabels. You know how the net is...one link leads you to another and then another and another and the next thing you know, you've download 10 free releases.

Free is obviously a huge attraction for most netlabel releases. With some of the recordings, it's a good thing they are free. It's not that they are bad, just that I probably won't come back to them again and again in the future. However, some releases are very good. Nest, released earlier this year on Serein is an excellent recording. Marsen Jules has two Autoplate releases, Yara & Lazy Sunday Funerals, which I highly recommend.

I haven't really had time to digest all the new music yet, but I thought I'd put together a quick mix using all netlabel albums that I've downloaded in the last couple of weeks.

Here's a list of some interesting netlabels...

  1. Serein
  2. Aerotone
  3. Test Tube
  4. 12rec
  5. Tripostal
  6. Miasmah
  7. Rain Music
  8. Ekonetlabel
  9. Mendorla
  10. Thinner
  11. Autoplate

I just noticed a new Off The Sky release at Autoplate. I'll be downloading that one asap. All of the labels listed here are worth browsing.

breathing music

After a quick side trip we are back to a straight forward, ambient mix.

I got the idea for this mix from my online friend, Brian and his excellent podcast, The Quiet Sounds. At the beginning of the year he did a mix of sleep music and said this about it..."many of these tracks have a lullaby, 'breathing' quality...".

The idea of "breathing" music caught my attention. I would come back to the concept again and again as I listened to music this year. So I finally decided to put together my own mix of "breathing" music.

Most of the tracks have a common feel...in & out, back & forth, ebb & flow...a wash of sound that fades then the wash returns. Most of the cuts are fairly new, though I was happy to squeeze in some old Cluster & Eno.

Sydney's Summer Mix

This month's mix is a departure from the usual ambient soundscapes. The new download comes to us from my 15 year old daughter, Sydney. She made this mix for our family vacation at a small cottage in northern Wisconsin.

She didn't just pick the tunes, she did the mix herself using Acoustica MP3 mixer. I think she did an excellent job. I know she kept obsessing about whether segues were just right.

The music is fairly acoustic in nature. Some artists, like The Fray, are fairly typical for a 15 yr old. But some, like Kings of Convenience & The Decemberists, are a bit more unexpected. I'm just glad her music taste doesn't run to 50 cent, High School Musical or Toby Keith.

I hope you enjoy it.

There Will Come Soft Rains

I started this mix a couple of weeks ago and I wasn't sure when to post it. Then the rains came. We have been getting pelted here for a week, so I figured now is the perfect time to post a rain mix.

Based on the amount of rain we've been getting maybe a more appropriate title would have been "A hard rain is gonna fall & flood my basement & turn my backyard into a swamp." I guess that's a little long. So I'll stick with "There Will Come Soft Rains". The title is taken from a short story by Ray Bradbury who takes the title from a poem by Sara Teasdale. Not that poem or story have anything to do with the mix, I just love the sound of the line.

The music in this mix is a collection of tunes I thought would work well with the sound of rain. Most of the rain you hear in this mix was added by me. I hope I didn't over do it. The listening environment has a lot to do with how the rain is perceived. While mixing in a quiet room I kept worrying about too many rain fx, but then listening in my office at work, I couldn't hear half of the rain sounds. Hopefully I managed to strike the right balance.

Prog Rock Mix '07

And now for something completely different....

Any listeners/downloaders that are familiar with The Hydrogen Cafe mix blog, know that Rick has recently done a few mixes for vacationing in northern Wisconsin. I was having a tough time trying to figure out what kind of mixes I'd contribute this year.

So I Present the Prog Rock Mix '07, a mix that is nothing like any of the other mixes that I've posted here. Being a child of the 70's, I was a huge progressive/art rock fan. I still love old Genesis, Yes & King Crimson.

For this mix I stayed away from those obvious choices. So instead I used artists such as PFM, Egg, Gilgamesh, Le Orme, etc. With a well known artist like Pink Floyd, I picked cuts from less well known albums "Obscured by Clouds" & "Atom Heart Mother". This mix is definitely not a best of prog rock or anything like that. Just a collections of tunes that I thought worked well together.

It was a lot of fun rummaging through these old tunes. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. And don't worry I'll return to the normal ambient mixes soon.

Download it here...

Piano Mix 2007

Of all the mixes I've posted here, the Piano Mix is the one offline mix that I get the most requests for. So I figured another piano-themed mix was in order.

Most of the music is fairly new, such as the cuts from Budd & Guthrie, Goldmund, On, Nest, Stars of the Lid and Fennesz & Sakamoto. There's not much else to say about this mix. It's just some excellent ambient-ish piano in a nice hour-long mix. I hope you enjoy it.

a drift on the signal

A few years ago I became fascinated by the release of The Conet Project, recordings of the famous short-wave "numbers" stations, rumored to be operated by various covert intelligence operations. These stations transmit in different languages, employing male and female voices repeating strings of numbers or phonetic letters day and night, all year round. The recordings a very spooky.

I've used these recordings in a few mixes & was always interested in exploring other shortwave recordings. Then a few weeks ago I came across the SHORTWAVEMUSIC blog. Run by Myke Weiskopf, the blog is dedicated to music and/or musical noise intercepted via shortwave radio. These musical recordings feature a bit of noise, hum, drift & interference. But that's exactly what makes them so haunting. The washes of static mix wonderfully with a Sudanese oud player or Qu'ran chants or post-Soviet melancholia.

I highly recommend heading over to Myke's blog and taking some time to browse through his amazing collection of 'shortwave music'. Two of my favorite posts are "the Dream"(6th from the bottom) and Post-Soviet Melancholia, Part IV(about halfway down, July 29th 2005).

Myke also has a CD available that I just bought. It is an interesting collection of tunes, quite a wide variety of styles & sounds. He, of course, uses shortwave in some of the tracks. I used two cuts from the cd in this new mix. You can find info about the album here. Myke's myspace page is here.

I used quite a few clips from the Shortwavemusic blog in this new mix. The rest of the music is just some stuff I came across that I thought would work well with the shortwave feel. I just had to use Basinski's "The River" as it was constructed from shortwave recordings. I figured this mix was probably my only chance to use The Bulgarian Women's Choir singing one of my favorite choral pieces. I think it fits perfectly. I really wanted to get something in there from William Fields' cd, "Timbre". It's a good ambient, glitchy work on the Gears of Sand label. I was also happy to squeeze in some Bexar Bexar form the excellent new release, "Tropism".

Around 19 minutes into the mix is some music from My Fun. You can download the latest EP, idyll, at the net label Test Tube. My two favorite Ukrainian shortwaves occur at around 15:10 - 17:21 and 48:00 - 50:27.

The start & stop times for the tracks may be a little confusing. That's because of the fluid nature of this mix. Multiple tracks fading in & out at various times. I like the mix & hope you do too. Thanks again to Myke Weiskopf for all the great shortwave recordings.

New cd's

I've been listening to a couple excellent cd's the past few days & because they are on small record labels I figured I'd give them a big recommendation here.

The first is Loren Dent - Empires & Milk on Contract Killers Records - a very nice ambient recording. It combines ambient electronics, drones & some acoustic elements, for a nice dreamy listening experience. It's beautiful, floating music with enough grit & feedback to keep it from being too sweet. More info here...
http://www.contractkillersrecords.com/index.html

The other disc is Bexar Bexar - Tropism on Own Records - another beautiful recording. This one also combines electronics & acoustic instruments, mostly acoustic guitar. The guitar here is more out front & the electronics & drones are background & coloring. This cd is not as purely ambient as the Loren Dent release. But it is just as beautiful & more melancholy. Tropism also uses some grit & feedback to keep things interesting. Info here...

Two wonderful recordings.

String Theory Vol. 2

The mix I did last year, called String Theory, was one of my favorites. So I decided to do a sequel, creatively titled String Theory Vol. 2.

This one relies on new music more than the first mix did. I'm pretty happy with the way it flows from track to track. The goal is to never really be sure where one track ends & the next begins.

Thanks to the folks who have posted links on their own blogs. It's always nice to hear from people who have enjoyed the mixes. I do these mixes mostly for my own enjoyment/amusement. But it is very cool to hear from folks from all around the world who have listened to the mixes. It kind of boggles the mind that Nick in London or Sebastien in France are listening to mixes that I threw together here in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, USA. The internet is a wonderful thing.

Anyway here's the link to the new mix...

A Slow Thaw

There is no real theme to hold this mix together other than the great music in it.

I called this mix "A Slow Thaw" because that's exactly what we are having in Wisconsin right now. Tons of snow on the ground(at least 2 weeks ago when I put this together) that is slowly, but surely, melting away. As I put the mix together, it seemed to fit well with the puddles, dripping icicles and receding snow.

Most of the music in this mix is fairly new, either 2006 or 2007. I limited my choices to what I had been listening to in the last couple of months.

I need a new theme for the next mix. Any ideas? I've done stargazing mixes, mixes based on certain instruments, winter themes, etc. I will post a new orchestral mix, String Theory Vol. 2 very soon. But also I need some new ideas.

Anyway, here's the download link for the new mix...
